Why standby generators make sense in Erie County

Erie County sees weather that other parts of Pennsylvania don't. Lake-effect snow bands drop two feet overnight without warning. Straight-line summer storms take out grid lines from the peninsula to the vineyards of North East. Ice storms in March coat every cable in half an inch of load. When the lights go out here, it's rarely a five-minute inconvenience — it's twelve hours, or thirty-six, or five days depending on how badly the grid was hit and where you are in the repair priority list. A whole-home standby generator makes that a non-event: within fifteen seconds of the utility going down, the transfer switch cuts in and the generator carries the entire house until the grid comes back.

We're a factory-trained Generac installer which means the manufacturer warranty registers correctly, we can service what we sold, and — this matters — we don't oversize the unit to pad the ticket.

Sizing: the part most quotes get wrong

The right generator size is not "the largest one the salesperson can talk you into." It's a number that falls out of a load calculation done on your actual panel. We look at every large fixed load in the house — the central AC or heat pump, the electric water heater or heat-pump water heater, the range, the dryer, any hot tub, sauna, EV charger, well pump, or shop equipment — plus receptacle and lighting load using the NEC 220 general-lighting factor. Then we look at what happens if the two or three biggest of those try to start at the same time during an outage.

For most single-family Erie County homes (2,000–2,800 sq ft, central AC, gas heat, gas water heater), a Generac Guardian 22 kW air-cooled is our default recommendation. It runs the whole house without load-shedding gymnastics and stays quiet enough to satisfy setback distance from a neighbor's bedroom window. Smaller homes and essentials-only installs work well at 14–18 kW. Large all-electric homes with heat pumps, hot tubs, EV chargers, and shop loads justify 24–26 kW or a 27 kW liquid-cooled unit.

What we install

• Kohler 14/20/26 kW residential units for customers who prefer them.
• Automatic transfer switches: whole-house 200A service-rated switches, and managed-transfer switches with load shedding when the generator is smaller than the service.
• Portable generator interlocks and manual transfer switches for customers who already own a portable unit and just want a safe way to back-feed the panel.

What the install actually involves

1. Site visit and sizing. We look at your panel, your gas meter capacity (or discuss a propane tank), your yard setbacks, and your neighbor's windows. Locate the pad, plan the trench.
2. Permit and utility coordination. We pull the electrical permit, coordinate with National Fuel Gas (or your propane company) for the gas run, and schedule the utility disconnect for transfer switch install.
3. Pad, gas, and set. Concrete pad or composite pad, gas line run and pressure-tested, generator set on pad and leveled.
4. Transfer switch and wiring. ATS mounted at the service, SER feeder run between generator and switch, control wiring landed, all terminations torqued to spec.
5. Commissioning. We fill oil, run the startup sequence, verify frequency and voltage, run a load test simulating an outage, verify the weekly exercise cycle, and pair the Mobile Link cellular monitor to your app.
6. Walk-through and warranty. We show you how the exercise cycle works, what the LEDs mean, how to shut off the unit for maintenance, and we register the manufacturer warranty in your name.

Service after the install

Generac recommends annual service — oil, filter, spark plug, battery check, load test. We offer a flat-rate annual service plan or you can just call us when the "Service Due" light comes on. We also service Generac and Kohler units we did not install; a lot of customers come to us because their original installer disappeared.
