Home EV charging done right

If you've just bought an EV in Erie County — a Tesla Model Y from the Millcreek delivery hub, a Ford F-150 Lightning off a dealer's lot in North East, a Rivian picked up out of state — the single best decision you can make in the first month is to stop leaning on the mobile connector and get a real Level-2 charger installed in the garage. Overnight charging on 240 volts adds 25–40 miles of range per hour plugged in, so a car that comes home at 30% is at 100% by breakfast. It also does not require you to think about your car; you drive in, you plug in, you walk into the house. That is the whole appeal.

The trick is the install. An EV charger is one of the highest continuous loads a modern home ever sees — 32 to 48 amps for hours at a stretch — and it demands a properly sized dedicated circuit, correctly torqued terminations, and a real conversation about your existing service capacity. This is where we come in.

What we do on a typical Erie-County EV install

1. Load calculation. We use NEC 220.83 or the optional 220.87 method to verify your existing service can accept the charger you want. Most 200-amp homes can take a 60-amp charger. Many 100-amp homes can too — after we do the math.
2. Circuit design. We size wire, breaker, and conduit for the charger's maximum continuous output (typically 48A charger on 60A breaker, or 40A on 50A). We route the run to minimize drywall damage and keep it accessible.
3. Panel work. We land a new two-pole breaker, torque to spec, and update the panel directory. If the panel is full we'll discuss a sub-panel or a service upgrade before we quote.
4. Conduit and cable. We run EMT or MC through the appropriate spaces. Neat runs. Straps every 10 feet. No wire draped across the ceiling.
5. Charger mount. Anchored into studs, level, at a height that suits the way you'll actually pull in. Cable holster installed.
6. Commissioning. We plug in your car, verify amperage draw, verify temperature at the plug (thermal camera check), and set app pairing if the unit has one. We register the warranty in your name before we leave.
7. Permit and inspection. Yes, EV chargers require permits in most Erie County municipalities. We pull them and meet the inspector.

Tesla, ChargePoint, or something else?

Tesla owners can go two ways: the standard Wall Connector (proprietary NACS plug, slick, integrates with the app, works with any Tesla) or the newer Universal Wall Connector (NACS plug that adapts to J1772, so a future non-Tesla still works). Both are excellent units and both are worth the small premium over cheaper competitors. Non-Tesla owners: ChargePoint Home Flex is the most feature-complete J1772 unit on the market; Wallbox Pulsar Plus is compact and elegant; Enphase IQ EV is a strong choice if you already have Enphase solar. Emporia and Grizzl-E deliver 90% of the feature set for 60% of the price. We install any of them and we won't upsell you.

Hardwired vs plug-in (NEMA 14-50)

A hardwired install lets the charger draw its full rated amperage on a matched circuit and is required for 50A+ continuous loads by manufacturer specification. It is also more reliable long-term — no plug to work loose, no receptacle to fail from repeated heat cycles. A NEMA 14-50 outlet is legitimately useful if you may move the charger to a different location within a year or two, but if the charger is going to live in this garage for the next decade, we recommend hardwired.

Commercial and multi-family EV charging

We also install commercial chargers — pedestal ChargePoint CT4000s, Wallbox Copper SB for shared use, and DC fast chargers when the site can support the service.
