Level 1: your car came with one
Every EV sold in North America ships with a Level-1 cord that plugs into a standard 120V outlet. It draws 12 amps continuous (some newer cars support 16A) and adds roughly 3–5 miles of range for every hour plugged in. For a driver in downtown Erie who commutes eight miles round-trip to the office and can leave the car plugged in overnight, that math works: ten hours = 40 miles = tomorrow's commute plus a little. For most Erie County drivers, though — the ones going out to Millcreek Mall, over to the girls' game in Fairview, and back into town — Level-1 becomes an exercise in watching the state-of-charge bar slowly not keep up. Fine as a backup, painful as a primary.
Level 2: what you actually want at home
Level 2 uses the same 240V split-phase power that runs your electric dryer and delivers 20 to 50+ miles of range per hour. This is the sweet spot for residential EV charging in Erie County and it's what 95% of our customers end up with. A Level-2 install requires a dedicated circuit off your electrical panel, sized for the charger you pick. The two most common configurations we install:
- 32-amp charger on a 40-amp circuit. Adds ~25 miles per hour. Perfect for a Model 3, Bolt, Leaf, ID.4, Ioniq 5 — really any EV under about 80 kWh of battery. Cheaper wire, cheaper breaker, cheaper install. Our default recommendation for the average commuter.
- 48-amp charger on a 60-amp circuit. Adds ~34 miles per hour. Worth the extra $150–$300 in wire and breaker if you have a Model Y Long Range, Model X, Lightning, Rivian, Silverado EV, or a household with two EVs sharing one garage.
A few chargers offer 80A modes for use on 100A circuits. In practice we've installed only a handful of these — the marginal miles-per-hour gain from 48A to 80A rarely justifies the panel and service capacity required. If you legitimately need that much charging, you probably want two 48A chargers on separate circuits instead.
Level 3 / DC Fast Charging
Level 3 chargers — the ones you see at Sheetz superchargers along I-79 or at the Tesla Supercharger by the Peninsula — deliver DC power directly to the car's battery at 50 kW up to 350 kW. They require 480V three-phase utility service, large transformers, and equipment that runs $30,000+ per stall installed. No homeowner in Erie County needs one. Tesla NACS vs J1772 vs CCS: connector shape matters less than you think
Every non-Tesla EV sold in North America through 2024 uses the J1772 connector (Level 2) and CCS1 (Level 3). Tesla uses its own smaller NACS connector. Starting in 2025 the industry began standardizing on NACS for all Level-2 charging, and Ford, Rivian, GM, and Volvo now ship with NACS ports too. What this means practically: buy a charger with the plug that matches your current car, and know that inexpensive adapters cover the other direction. Tesla's Universal Wall Connector ships with a NACS plug that swaps to J1772 in seconds. ChargePoint's Home Flex ships J1772-native. Either works for whatever you own now.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Level-1 enough for my commute?+
If you drive under 40 miles a day and can leave the car plugged in overnight for 10+ hours, Level-1 (120V, 4–5 miles per hour) is genuinely sufficient. For most Erie County commuters it's fine as a backup but painful as a primary.
Do I need Level-3 (DC fast charging) at home?+
No. Level-3 requires 480V three-phase service and $30,000+ in equipment; residential customers should never look at it. Public DC fast chargers along I-90 and I-79 handle road trips.
What's the difference between 32A and 48A Level-2?+
About 20% more miles per hour of charging. A 32A charger adds ~25 mph; a 48A charger adds ~34 mph. Both are Level-2. The 48A option requires a 60A circuit and often justifies itself for larger battery packs.
Do smart chargers matter?+
